Food Is the New Floristry: Why Edible Event Styling Is Changing the Way We Entertain

There was a time when the food at an event was simply something to eat. A buffet tucked into the corner, a few sandwich platters and perhaps a bowl of crisps for good measure. But what if the food could be so much more? I'm going to say something potentially controversial. I think we've been looking at event catering all wrong. For years, we've spent considerable time (and money) making our celebrations look beautiful. The flowers, the candles, the table linen, the carefully selected colour palettes. And then, somewhere amongst all that thought and creativity, the food arrives on a collection of silver platters. Don't get me wrong. There is absolutely a place for a good sandwich. But should the food really be an afterthought when everything else has been so carefully considered?

I don't think so.

When food becomes part of the decoration

At Bespoke by J, I work with a simple philosophy: food should look every bit as beautiful as the occasion you're celebrating. Think sculptural fruit towers, vibrant seasonal produce, beautifully arranged canapés and desserts that are almost too pretty to eat. Almost. This is what I mean by edible event styling. Rather than treating catering and decoration as two separate elements, we bring them together to create one cohesive experience. A beautifully styled grazing table can become the centrepiece of a room. It encourages guests to gather, sparks conversation and creates a natural focal point without requiring an entirely separate decorative installation. And unlike a floral arrangement, guests can actually eat it.

The beauty of a table that brings people together

There is something wonderfully informal about a grazing table. Nobody needs to wait for a waiter. There's no rigid seating plan or formal dinner service. Guests can help themselves, discover something new and enjoy food at their own pace. For me, this is where the magic happens. Because beautiful food isn't really about creating something that looks good on Instagram. That's a lovely bonus, of course. But it's about creating an environment where people feel comfortable, connected and genuinely excited to be there. The food becomes part of the experience rather than an interruption to it.

A more considered way to entertain

One of the things I love about creative catering is that it encourages us to think differently about where we invest our event budget. If you're already planning to spend money on flowers, centrepieces and decorative installations, could some of that investment be incorporated into a beautifully styled food display instead? A thoughtfully designed grazing table can combine seasonal ingredients, carefully selected serving pieces, complementary florals and decorative details. It doesn't necessarily mean spending less. But it can mean getting more from the money you've already decided to spend. And for anyone who has hosted an event, there's another rather wonderful benefit: someone else takes care of making it all look beautiful.

From Cotswolds weddings to intimate celebrations

Across Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, there are so many occasions where creative catering makes perfect sense. An intimate wedding morning where the bridal party gathers around a beautiful breakfast display. A baby shower with delicate desserts and seasonal fruit. A hen weekend in a countryside cottage where the grazing table becomes part of the celebration itself. Even a corporate gathering can feel entirely different when the food is designed to encourage conversation rather than simply fill a lunch break. The common thread isn't the size of the occasion or even the budget. It's the decision to make the experience feel considered.

So, is food the new floristry?

Perhaps I'm biased. But I think we're entering an era where food deserves a much more prominent place in how we design our celebrations. Not because flowers are going anywhere. I love flowers, and they're often an important part of my tables. But because the most memorable events appeal to more than one of our senses. They look beautiful. They taste delicious. They make us feel something. And if your guests are still talking about the food weeks later, well, I think that's a pretty good indication that you've got something right.
